Arrival: Longleat Safari Park

A pet rat, now named Jules after its finder, was dumped in very poor condition at one of the Park's gates. It has now been carefully nursed back to health and, proving to be very good-natured and intelligent, is set to join the cast in the daily Meet the Creatures talks at Pets Corner. |

A Sheepmaker's Crowned Pigeon chick has hatched, the fourth for the parents since their arrival at the Park in 2004. The species is the largest of the Pigeon family, and only lays one egg at a time. |

A young male Chinchilla has arrived from the Mallydams Wood RSPCA Centre, Hastings, after being abandoned by its former owner, and rescued by a dog-walker. |

Chandra, a male Asiatic Lion, has arrived from Bristol Zoo, to replace Sabu (who died last year) as Akela's mate. Chandra is also Sabu's brother, and was previously resident at the Park in 1994-6. |

Two Red Pandas have arrived, to replace the existing male called Beijing who has gone to join a female at Dublin Zoo. Sandy, a 3 1/2 year old female, came from Dublin Zoo, and Julius, a 7 year old male, came from Marwell Zoo. It is hoped that they will breed in the next year or so. |

A baby female Binturong (also known as Bearcat) called Sunti has been born to parents Jelita and Awam. Unfortunately the cub has been rejected by her mother, and is being hand-reared by keepers. This is the first Binturong to be born in the UK for 10 years, and will be an important member of the European breeding programme for this endangered South East Asian species. |

A group of Mashmi Takin have arrived from Edinburgh Zoo. These animals look like a cross between a Wildebeest, Bison and Moose, and are endangered in the wild due to habitat loss. |
