Death: Newquay Zoo

Kabir, the 14-year-old Lion who arrived only last October from Longleat, has sadly had to be put to sleep after it was discovered that he had broken a leg. The cause of the break is unknown; it is assumed that he somehow twisted it or landed badly. |

Five Pygmy Slow Lorises have been moved to zoos across Europe as part of the international breeding programme. They were all bred at Paignton Zoo, and have gone to Zurich Zoo, Switzerland, Amersfoot Zoo, Netherlands, Opole Zoo, Poland, and two to Riga Zoo, Latvia. Paignton still has 10 of this species, 5 of which are on show to visitors, one of the largest collections in Europe. The species is classed as Vulnerable and is under threat from habitat loss. It was also nearly wiped out due to burning and defoliation of forests during the Vietnam War. |

Jambo the Elephant has moved to the Bioparc Valencia, Spain, a brand-new state-of-the-art zoo He will be followed by Kito, another young bull. It is hoped that the two of them will become active members of the European breeding programme. |

Two male Yellow Breasted Capuchin Monkeys (brothers) have arrived from Edinburgh Zoo. They are named `Pataxo' (8 yrs) and `Tuxa' (7 yrs) and have great characters. |

Jorong, a 12-year-old male Orang-Utan has arrived from Dublin Zoo, Ireland, to join the resident females Azzimat and Jazz as part of the breeding programme for this highly endangered species. |

Four Maned Wolves, all last year's cubs, are due to move to other zoos: Belfast Zoo, Edinburgh Zoo, Busselengo in Italy, and Szeged in Hungary. A young Tapir has also gone to Branfere Zoo, Guerno, France. |

Two White-collared Lemurs have been born, to first-time mum Harriet and experienced mum Hope. This is great news for this critically endangered species, which is ranked as the second rarest primate in the world. |

Two Purple-Faced Langurs, or Leaf Monkeys, (a female and her youngster) have arrived from Belfast Zoo, and should soon be joined by a male from Twycross Zoo. This species is only found on Sri Lanka and is endangered from habitat loss and other threats. It is also currently only kept by three zoos in Europe. |

A baby male Bactrian Camel called Meldrum has been born, to parents Mitzi and Stavros - a surprise for the keepers since Mitzi did not appear to be pregnant! Good news for the species, however, which is endangered with only around 1,000 left in the wild. |
