Birth: June 2008

Four baby Meerkats have been born, to parents Kalahari and Timon.

Some baby Skunks have also been born, to parents Fifi and Takoda.

Arrival: May 2008

Two African Long-eared Hedgehogs (Penny and Percy), and an albino African Pygmy Hedgehog (Alfie) have arrived.

Birth: April 2008

Triplet baby Geoffroy's Marmosets have been born.

Description

The Tropical Wings World of Wildlife is located just outside South Woodham Ferrers, between Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea in Essex. Many of its displays are under cover, making Tropical Wings an all-weather attraction. This includes one of the largest butterfly houses in the country. As well as free-flying butterflies, the animal collection also includes a veriety of exotic parrots, marmosets, red squirrels, wallabies, meerkats, skunks, polecats, raccoons, ring-tailed lemurs, reptiles, and owls and other birds of prey.

For the children, Tropical Wings features an assault course adventure playground, toddler's play area, mini-tractor rides, pets corner, and an extensive daily programme of interactive animal handling and feeding sessions. There are also flying demonstrations for some of the owls and other birds of prey.

The Butterfly Tea Rooms provides a range of hot and cold home-baked refreshments, including cream teas, cakes, and complete meals. There are also other snack bars and picnic areas, some under cover.

How To Get There:

By Car

From Chelmsford (& A12 north-east):

Follow the A130 south from Chelmsford towards Southend-on-Sea and Basildon. At junction with A132, follow signs through roundabouts to take A132 towards South Woodham Ferrers. After about 2.4 miles, on outskirts of South Woodham Ferrers and shortly before roundabout, turn left and left again onto Wickford Road, and follow signs to Tropical Wings, which will shortly be on your right.

From Southend-on-Sea:

Take the A127 towards Basildon and London. At junction with A13 and A130, turn `right' onto A130 towards Chelmsford. At junction with A132, follow signs through roundabouts to take A132 towards South Woodham Ferrers. Continue to Tropical Wings, as described above.

From M25:

At M25 junction 29, turn onto A127 towards Basildon and Southend-on-Sea. Continue past Basildon to junction with A13 and A130. Turn'left' onto A130 towards Chelmsford, and continue to South Woodham Ferrers and Tropical Wings as described above.

By Public Transport

By Bus:

From Chelmsford:

First bus no. 36 to Asda store, South Woodham Ferrers.

From Basildon (Roundacre): NIBS no. 237 to Asda store, South Woodham Ferrers.

From Rayleigh (The Travellers Joy):

First bus no. 35 to The Blue Lion at Great Baddow, then change onto no. 36 from Chelmsford, as described above.

From Southend (Travel Centre Stop Y):

First bus no X30 to Chelmsford bus station, then take no. 36 as described above.

By Train:

From London Liverpool Street Station:

Either: Take a through train to Southminster, and alight at Woodham Ferrers Station

Or: Take a Southend train to Wickford, then change onto a Southminster line train, and alight at Woodham Ferrers Station.

Or: Take a train to Chelmsford, then proceed by bus as described above from the bus station (a short walk between rail and bus stations).

From Rayleigh & Southend Victoria Station:

Take a London train to Wickford, then change onto a Southminster line train, and alight at Woodham Ferrers Station.

From Norwich, Ipswich & Colchester:

Take a London train and either alight at Chelmsford and continue by bus, as described above, or continue to Shenfield and change onto a Southminster or Southend train as described above (from London).
