It has been announced that the Californian Sea Lions are to leave this year, to move to another collection in the Mediterranean that can provide large lagoons for them to live in. Their pool will be redeveloped to provide a larger home for the Humboldt Penguins.

Gem, a young female Meerkat, has arrived from Battersea Park, London, to form a new breeding pair with Inca, a young male who was born at the park in 2008. Inca was rejected by the existing group when he was reintroduced following an illness in November 2009.

A baby female Kirk's Dik Dik has been born, and is being hand-reared by keepers. This is one of the smaller antelope species; typically growing to only about 40 cm (16 inches) tall. The baby has been named Khola, meaning 'graceful antelope' in Swahili.

A pair of Snow Leopards, called Indeever and Irina, have arrived as part of the European breeding programme for this endangered species. Indeever has come from Zurich Zoo, Switzerland, and Irina has come from Nordens Ark, Sweden. They are both just under 2 years old.

Edmund the Giraffe has sadly died; he was found by his keepers to have passed away during the night. The cause of his death is yet to be determined. He was the oldest Giraffe at the zoo, having been born at Whipsnade Zoo in February 1999 and arrived at Colchester in February 2001.

A Wrinkled Hornbill chick has hatched, and has now successfully fledged and left its nest, after almost 100 days sealed in with its mother, both of them being fed by the father passing food through a small slit left in the nest entrance.

Lesser Bushbaby twins have been born, to parents Bob and Beatrix. A boy and a girl, the babies have been named Bonbon and Belle (respectively). Belle if the first female to be born since their arrival in 2005.

Bull, the male White Rhino and the last of the original trio of Rhinos at the park, has sadly had to be put to sleep after a prolonged period of veterinary attention for ailments associated with old age. He had reached the age of 41, a very great age for a Rhino, and had been at the park since 1972.
