Description
The Three Owls Bird Sanctuary, near Rochdale in Lancashire, is primarily a wild bird hospital and rehabilitation centre; it is open for bird admissions daily between 9am and 4pm, or for emergencies at any time. It is open to visitors on Sundays (12noon to 4pm) and during special fund raising events. Depending on the time of year (June/July are usually the busiest), there may be between 200 and 1000 birds at various stages of rehabilitation. Birds are normally rehabilitated successfully and returned to the wild. However, where this is not possible, they are given sanctuary in one of the many aviaries, or on the Sanctuary's 4.5 acre nature reserve. Guided tours are given around the reserve during normal visitor opening times. The reserve is also home to a heronry, at one time the largest in the Northwest, that was started by a pair of herons rescued by the Sanctuary in the 1980's.
Although there is no admission fee for visitors, the Three Owls Bird Sanctuary is funded entirely by voluntary donations or other fund raising activities, so please give generously.
