Description

The National Parrot Sanctuary was originally created to provide rehabilitation and a long term home and for unwanted or abused parrots from across the country. No bird is turned away, and the Sanctuary can also provide help advice to pet owners, including a medical centre that can provide services to those who cannot find a local avian vet.

Now named The Parrot Zoo, incorporating The National Parrot Sanctuary, the Sanctuary is also a major visitor attraction, offering a wealth of fun activities and facilities for a family day out. The Sanctuary opened its doors to the public in 2003, and has been expanding ever since. Set among 5 acres of landscaped gardens, the Sanctuary now houses the largest and most diverse collection of parrots in the UK, and is also the only dedicated parrot zoo in Europe. The collection currently includes over 1200 birds from 92 species, and is constantly growing. As well as many Parrot species, the collection also features Parakeets, Cockatoos, Conures, Macaws, Amazons, Lorikeets and Pionus from around the world. The birds are housed in large aviaries that give them the choice of being out on public view, or retiring to their private quarters.

How To Get There:

By Car

The Parrot Zoo is in Lincolnshire, only 15 minutes from Skegness: follow the brown tourist signs from the A52 or A16.

Note to Satnav users: the postcode above appears to correspond to private houses further north along Dickon Hill Road.

From Skegness:

Follow the A52 south-west towards Boston, past Wainfleet All Saints and through the small village of Wainfleet St Mary. After about a further 2 miles, look out for the brown tourist sign to the Zoo to turn right towards the village of Friskney. There are several of minor turnings to the right from the A52 in this area; use the one marked by the tourist sign, then follow the tourist signs to and through Friskney, and on towards Eastville. Continue through the tiny village of Small End, and the entrance to the Zoo will be on your left about 1.5 miles from Friskney.

From Grimsby:

Follow the A16 south past Louth and on towards Skegness and Boston. Turn right at the roundabout junction with the A1104 (Alford) and A1028 (Skegness) and continue to follow the A16 south towards Boston. Continue through Spilsby and on to the small village of Stickney. Towards the far side of the centre of this village, turn left onto unclassified road towards Eastville and Friskney. Continue on this road through Eastville and across the railway. After just under a further 2 miles, turn right onto minor road towards Friskney. The entrance to the Zoo will then be on your right after about 1 mile.

From Lincoln:

Follow the A158 east through Horncastle and on towards Skegness, to its junction with the A16. Turn right onto the A16 towards Boston, and continue through Spilsby and on to the Zoo as described above (from Grimsby).

From Boston:

Either follow the A16 north towards Louth and Grimsby, to the village of Stickney. Turn right near the centre of the village onto unclassified road towards Eastville and Friskney. Continue on this road through Eastville and across the railway. After just under a further 2 miles, turn right onto minor road towards Friskney. The entrance to the Zoo will then be on your right after about 1 mile.

Or follow the A52 north-east towards Skegness, through or past the small villages of Haltoft End, Benington, Leverton, Old Leake, Wrangle and Wrangle Lowgate. About 1.5 miles from Wrangle Lowgate, where the A52 turns sharp right at a minor crossroads, continue forward onto unclassified road towards Friskney. After just over 0.5 miles, fork left at the next turning left, then fork left again at the next turning. Continue along this road for about 2.5 miles, past a turning to the left, two turnings to the right, and a second turning to the left. The Entrance to the Zoo will then be a short distance on your left.

From Newark on Trent, and A1 North:

Follow the A17 east past Sleaford and on towards Boston, to its junction with the A1121. Turn left onto the A1121 and follow it, and then the A52, to and through Boston. Continue to the Zoo as described above (from Boston).
